About GOLDEN
GOLDEN is a wordless screendance in which a woman discovers, after years of domestic life, that her independence, intellectual curiosity, and sexual vibrancy are as powerful as ever. In dream-like sequences, she encounters the self she has been and the self that she can become. From her musings emerges a passionate self-declaration, elucidated by repeated choreographic motifs, flashbacks and flashforwards, and the evolution of color and set decor. By extension, GOLDEN affirms a woman’s right to define herself—rather than be defined by others. At the same time, it also rejects the notion that aging women have an “expiration date” in terms of inherent value. In all, GOLDEN is a unique alchemy—from drudgery to sparkling beauty.
About Kate Mitchell
First-time filmmaker Kate Mitchell is also a choreographer, sculptural couture artist, collagist, and the author of "Fashioning Women." With GOLDEN, she turns her hand to film as a dynamic vehicle for exploring the issues of women's empowerment in the face of cultural constraints.
Originally a professional dancer in New York, she later founded Kate Mitchell & Dancers in San Francisco. Since then, she has presented dance/theater performance events in numerous locations in San Francisco. Her collage and couture collections have been featured in galleries around the SF Bay Area, and her TERRAIN collection is currently on view at the San Jose (CA) Museum of Quilts and Textiles. Mitchell graduated from New York's School of Performing Arts (now the Fiorello H. LaGuardia School of the Arts), holds a BA in American Studies from Yale University and an MA in Dance from UCLA.
Reviewing "Fashioning Women," the San Francisco Examiner wrote, “If designer Jean Paul Gaultier and feminist leader Gloria Steinem had a lovechild—wrap your head around that one for a moment—she might have turned out like Kate Mitchell."
