About Motion State Arts

Motion State Arts celebrates contemporary dance and movement-based art by incubating innovative ideas and presenting forward-thinking performances.

MSA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to these two main activities:

ScreenDance RoadShow

ScreenDance RoadShow (formerly Motion State Dance Film Series) is the only year-long, traveling short film festival in New England devoted to showcasing the diversity of contemporary creative voices exploring the medium of choreography for the camera. By taking the festival “on the road” and into non-traditional film venues, such as art galleries, music halls, performing arts theaters, and university classrooms, ScreenDance RoadShow seeks to expose the films and filmmakers to new audiences. Every screening is followed by a public Q & A with the curators. All festival artists are invited and encouraged to take part in the conversation. Past venues have included Columbus Theatre (Providence, RI), Dean College (Franklin, MA), Jamestown Arts Center (RI), Newport Art Museum (RI), School for Contemporary Dance & Thought (Northampton, MA) and the Zeiterion Performing Arts Center (New Bedford, MA).

ScreenDance RoadShow is directed by Ali Kenner Brodsky and Andy Russ.

Motion State Dance Festival

The Motion State Dance Festival is a movement-based performance festival designed to introduce Rhode Island audiences to the latest in contemporary dance and dance film. This celebration of contemporary performance brings local and national artists together to share their boundary-pushing creative explorations with a growing Rhode Island dance audience.

Performances and screenings take place at The Wilbury Theatre Group in Providence. Workshops and artist conversations take place at Wilbury and in local schools and studios.

The Motion State Dance Festival is organized by Ali Kenner Brodsky, Lila Hurwitz and Andy Russ. David Henry was a key founder.

Motion State Arts also produces other dance events throughout the year. Check out the calendar for details.
