About Thrown

Suddenly, her familiar world vanishes. She no longer belongs—thrown into The New World of deceit and accusation—without hope.

For “Thrown,” John's idea developed from his dissertation and the philosophic concept ot “thrown-ness”: each of us tossed into a world not of our choosing. Susan focused on her feelings of isolation and irrelevancy as an aging dancer/educator. With these ideas we “threw” our soloist into a deceptively beautiful world, saturated with color—a threatening place in which she could not “belong.”

About John and Susan Mann

John and Susan Mann (husband and wife) have worked together for more than a decade creating dance for the camera films. John teaches in the Film and Media Studies Program at Johns Hopkins University and Susan teaches in the Dance Department at Towson University. Our projects begin with a shared idea and develop with the support of a costume designer, a lighting designer, and  diverse groups of dancers who have worked with us for years. We shoot all our projects in Super 16mm film.
