About Joanna

Joanna Kotze is the 2025/2026 Randjelović/Stryker Resident Commissioned Artist (RCA) at New York Live Arts, a 2025 National Dance Project Finalist, and a 2025 NYSCA Grant recipient. She received a 2024 Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grant to Artists and the 2013 “Bessie” Award for Outstanding Emerging Choreographer. She has also been supported by the Nathan M. Clark Foundation, City Artist Corps, New Music USA, the Jerome, Mertz-Gilmore, and Harkness Foundations, NYFA BUILD, Brooklyn Arts Council, and FCA Emergency Grant. Her work has been presented by UtahPresents, the American Dance Festival, Irondale, The Yard, Bates Dance Festival, New York Live Arts, Wexner Center, Velocity Dance Center, NAC Ottawa, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Danspace Project, American Dance Institute, Bard, Jacob’s Pillow, Movement Research, and others. She has taught all over the world and has been supported by residencies throughout the US and Europe. Joanna currently dances for Kimberly Bartosik and Stacy Matthew Spence, and has worked with Wally Cardona, Annie-B Parson, Donna Uchizono, Tendayi Kuumba, Kota Yamazaki, Netta Yerushalmy, the Metropolitan Opera, and others. She is originally from South Africa and has a BA in Architecture from Miami University.
